British Design Awards – The Olympic Velodrom by Hopkins Architects

One of the four permanent venues on the Olympic Park, the Velodrome provides a landmark venue for the indoor track cycling events at the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The building forms an elegant response to the brief by using simple materials in an efficient manner to meet the client’s aspirations within the available budget. It was design by Hopkins Architects and was the winner of The British Design Awards (sponsored by Elle Decoration).

Hopkins Architects were founded in 1979 by Sir Michael Hopkins. They are based in London and have projects all over the world. They worked in amazing projects like Norwick’s Forum, The Royal Academy of Arts, Victoria and Albert’s Museum, etc.

‘The bicycle is an ingenious ergonomic object and we wanted the same creativity and engineering rigour that goes into the bike to manifest itself in the building,’ says Michael Taylor, senior partner at Hopkins Architects. ‘The idea was for the external form to capture the energy and dynamism of the track itself.’ Together with his team, he exceeded the sustainability challenges set by the Olympic Delivery Authority for the project.
