PP TUBE CHAIR by Tom Price

We love limited editions and this particular chair caught our attention. Meet the the London designer who conquers more and more attention from museums, galleries and collectors around the world with creations that use unusual materials, Tom Price was the “Designer of the Year” in BOOMSPDESIGN 2012.

The works of Tom Price, involving objects of furniture, sculptures and installations, to raise the level artistic design: polypropylene tubes give life to a forest in the middle of Industry Gallery (Washington – USA); polypropylene ropes and clothes gain new meanings in armchairs and sculptures.

“Tom Price classifies his work as a combination of materials, processes and phenomena in the conception of works of mutual consent.”

The London designer classifies his work as a combination of materials, processes and phenomena in the conception of works of mutual consent. His creations are part of the collection of important contemporary art museums, such as the Denver Museum of Art, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, USA, and the Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe in Germany.

The PP Tube #1 Meltdown Chair is created by heating and pressing a seat-shaped former into a stack of common plumbing tubes. The ends of the tubes melt and fuse together as they come into contact with the heated former leaving a pattern of irregular holes on the surface of the molded seat. These are produced in a limited edition of 12 in white, and 8 in black.

This second version of the PP Tube Chair tests the strength of the material and process by greatly reducing the amount of tube used.

Whereas the first version had many legs for support, this has just four and many fewer welded joints overall.

“Tom Price classifies his work as a combination of materials, processes and phenomena in the conception of works of mutual consent.”

They form part of a series of chairs created using the same technique with different materials.
