Selfridge & Co.
Selfridges, also known as Selfridge & Co., is a chain of high end department stores in the United Kingdom. It was founded by Harry Gordon Selfridge. The flagship store on London‘s Oxford Street is the second largest shop in the UK (after Harrods) and opened 15 March 1909.
The Selfridges London flagship store is to undergo a £300 million transformation, which will see the launch of a new accessories space and the redevelopment of the store’s Duke Street entrance.
According to the store, the David Chipperfield Architects- led revamp is ‘the highest level of investment ever for a single project in a department store anywhere in the world’.
The five-year project is, Selfridges says, ‘designed to be best-in-class and unrivalled in its concept, architectural style and service delivery is part of an unprecedented level of investment from Selfridges.’
The main focus of the project is the expansion of the luxury handbag department, which is said to be doubling in size to cover more than 4645 m2 of the store’s ground floor.
